TRS protests short vacation for Dasara

The decision of the Board of Intermediate Education to shorten the Dasara vacation for junior colleges in the state has sparked off a row. While the state government has declared Dasara vacation for all schools from October 7 to 18, the Intermediate Board has announced holidays only for five days, from October 15 to 19.
The issue took on a political colour when Ms Kavitha, daughter of the Telangana Rashtra Samiti chief Mr K. Chandrashekar Rao and the president of Telangana Jagruthi, accused the Inter Board of deliberately cutting down the number of Dasara holidays because the festival is important for the Telangana region. She said she will launch a demonstration in front of the Inter Board office in Nampally.
The Board has clarified that it has been allowing five days holidays for Dasara for the past four years and it is not something started just this year. It has been doing this because too many holidays were disrupting academic activities, and lecturers are struggling to complete the syllabus on time.
But government lecturers want the same number of holidays as schools get. “There should be common holidays for schools and colleges. Several parents plan to go to their native places for Dasara along with their children. Due to variation in holidays, they will face several problems. We demand the Board announce holidays for ten days,” said Dr Madhusudan Reddy, general secretary, AP Government Junior Lecturers’ Association.
Private junior colleges and schools are under pressure from parents to complete the entire syllabus by the end of December as they anticipate trouble later when the Srikrishna committee submits its report on the bifurcation of the state.
